Millennium and Specialized Industrial Solutions Complete Groundbreaking Recycling Project
The Navy has been working to get rid of hundreds of decommissioned railcars for years. The cars were originally used during World War II to transport ammunition and firearms across country. The Navy had made several unsuccessful attempts at selling the railcars to an industrial recycling company, but the process wasn't cost-effective considering the limitations it presented. First, the railcars couldn't be demolished on Navy property because of contamination fears. That significantly increased the cost for any company to transport the cars to a yard equipped to handle such an operation. Second, each of the cars had to have the lead exterior paint and floor caulking abated prior to demolition. Third, Cal OSHA and Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD) guidelines on such a project are strict and need to be followed to the "T" to pass inspections. While the Navy wanted to give the operation another try, they were skeptical and waiting for it to fail again. When SIS, with Millennium as a subconsultant, won the bid they had a great vision for how to make this project a success.
